A native plant garden in Cardiff

The Novascape team recently completed a neat little front yard in Cardiff. The owner had removed two large trees that were presenting a risk to the house and really wanted to replace the trees with a range of beautiful native plants.

Veggie patch

We put in a small raised herb and veggie garden in the sunniest and most easily accessed part of the garden.

Watering system

We added a fully automated watering system covering the entire garden bed and veggie patch.

Native tree mulch

The trees that were removed had been mulched on site and so we only needed to spread the lemon-scented mulch all around – it gave off the most delightful smell.

Lots of native plants

Then we planted out with a range of native ground-covers, grasses shrubs and small trees including Corymbia Summer Red. These are spectacular trees originally from Western Australia – but bred for Eastern Australian conditions – that grow to about 5 metres in height. They produce vibrant red flowers loved by birds and bees and are truly spectacular trees.

We also planted Scaevola – a delightful ground cover that produces purple flowers, Grevillea Honey Gem – attracts birds and bees, and Dianella Little Jess – produces thick green foliage perfect for attracting small animals and lizards.

This garden not only offers a manageable patch for herbs and veggies, it’s low maintenance with thick mulch and automated watering and will row up to be a well-layered garden that attracts lots of wildlife.
