Setting up for Summer

Spring is a great time to prepare for the hot months ahead.

To save water over summer, it pays to top up the mulch on your garden beds now. A layer of mulch about 10cm thick not only prevents weed growth, it also holds heaps of water in the soil below. The best mulch has a great mix of large and small chunks of woody and leafy matter. Rake up all the sticks and leaves from your lawn and chuck that on your garden too.

Spring is also the perfect time to get your lawn into shape before Christmas!

Start by dethatching. Take a stiff rake and give your lawn a real good scratch. This pulls out all the dead old bits from the bottom freeing up space for new growth.

Coring your lawn aerates soil promoting soil health and allowing water to penetrate more deeply. Coring (basically taking a fork and stabbing the ground) is also a pretty good stress relief.

Top dressing (filling up holes with good soil) helps to even out your lawn and promotes new growth.

By far the best thing you can do for your lawn is fertilising. Use a good portion of chook poo or worm juice to get your lawn green and lush. Chook poo is packed with nitrogen and lawns love nitrogen.

Happy mulching, dethatching, coring, top dressing and fertilising!
